Royal Children's Hospital Fasting Guidelines

Morning Operations

No solid food or milk from 2:30am. Clear fluid can be given up till 6:30am. For children less than six months of age they need to have their last breastfeed finished by 5:30am however if they are taking formula feeds this needs to be completed by 4:30am.

Afternoon Operations

A light breakfast to be completed by 7:30am. Clear fluid can be given up till 11.30am. For children less than six months of age they need to have their last breastfeed finished by 10:30am however if they are taking formula feeds this needs to be completed by 9:30am.

Admission Times

These times are a guide only, you should have received paperwork from the office confirming them or a telephone call from the hospital.

Royal Children’s Hospital morning operations require patients to arrive at 7:15am, while those children having surgery in the afternoon need to arrive at 12 noon. 

Admission times will be staggered to avoid a build-up of patients in admissions.
